Born in Hungaria the tom cat Hiddigeigei came to Säckingen via Paris. He is Scheffel's mouthpiece and transmits the
poet's opinions und scepticism. Hiddigeigei has green eyes, a black velvet fur, a mighty
tail, and a "sometimes superciliously
suffering face". He also wants to be a poet and be better than the others. From the height of his tower he watches
the "bustle of the fractions". His faith in the goodness of mankind is
shattered; disappointed love teaches him to despise the world. The poor cat is scared of getting old, and describes the
decline of mankind and poetry. |
